Huh?!?!

There is a place of worship on the side of the road on the way into Keene from my town. I pass by it every week on the way in to do my errands. It has one of those "bill boards" out front that you can change the letters on and create catchy phrases. Typically, they have cute catch phrases about church, and God and such things. Sometimes it makes me smile, sometimes it makes me think.. and this past week and last weekend.. it has pissed me off.

The new slogan that went up late last week reads, "Marriage is God's way of protecting woman and children." Huh?!?! When I first read it, I actually said out loud, "WTF?" (the full phrase, no one else was in the car with me). I thought about it the whole time I was doing my errands, and then I read it again on the way back.

Then I got pissed. What the hell is that all about.. protecting woman and children. What about the woman who's husband beats her in front of the children? What about the woman who makes excuses for the bruises on herself and on her kids? What about the student who has an excuse for all the bruises and black eyes when the teacher inquisitively asks? What kind of protection is that??? I was pissed off about this all last weekend, and then I forgot about it.

Last night I drove by it, and the slogan was still up. They usually change it once a week, but they must really like this one. I would like to say I was more mellow about it, but that isn't the case. Last night my thought turned to all the children who are abused by their parents, sexually. All the little girls and boys who grow up with poor images of themselves, ashamed and battered. Unable to have a decent relationship with anyone of the other sex. The ones who takes years to trust again and need lots of love to be able to give love back. What about those kids? How is that protection I ask you????

I have a hard time understanding the reason behind putting such a thing up, and I have a harder time accepting that I am the only one bent out of shape about this. I really hope that they take it down soon.

Whatever. That doesn't make much sense to me either. Is this some anti-gay marriage comment? It's a big deal out here so that's how I'm taking it. Still doesn't make sense, but a lot of religious propoganda doesn't.

I'd want to attend just to find out WTH they were talking about.

That's the type of crazy nonsense they put on signs here in the south, I expected better from up there.
