Saturday, after I took the kids pictures, we went apple picking. Each year we wait a little longer to go, so that it can "cool off".. and each of the past 3 years.. it has been unseasonably warm the day that we pick apples. Saturday was no different. It was in the low 80s still at 4pm when we headed off to the orchard.
This is our second year with this orchard (our old favorite orchard shut down operations a few years ago) and we enjoyed our trip. We picked a peck of apples and on Sunday I put my first batch of cinnamon applesauce into the Crockpot. Nothing says fall like the smell of applesauce simmering all day long.
This week has definitely been cooler than last, and I have a feeling there will be more apple baking going on this weekend. If I can just get through this week.....

Homemade Applesauce!
Are you sure you don't have room in your family for a surrogate son? How about Crazy Uncle Sgt? Alms for the poor?
I just picked apples with my little guy the other day. I want to try making sauce but have never done it. any pointers? and does it store well or should I just try to get it devoured as quickly as possible?
thanks!

Felicia... I freeze what we aren't going to eat in a week or two. I find those 1/2 cup snack containers (you know.. ziplock etc)are great because you can freeze in individual servings. It stores for a year.
thanks for the tip! I just made some applesauce today and it's aweome! I don't know that I'd want store bought again, lol. I'm actually thinking of starting to "can" some things myself. picked up a book on it, will see if it sounds like something I could do. baked a bunch of stuff today too. using up the apples we picked the other day. We made apple muffins (totally fab), apple oatmeal cookies half with walnuts half with raisin (those rocked too, were nice and soft and chewy). We also made apple spice cookies, they tasted good but were way to soft. Tommorrow we're going to try apple bread, and and apple bundt cake.
