Chocolate vs. Vanilla

They started painting my house this week. While I love my house, I have never cared for the color. It reminds me of the color a melted Hershey chocolate bar turns. You know what color I'm talking about. When we first saw our house it was a deep dark brown, and the paint was peeling something fierce. In order for the VA to approve our loan, the seller had to paint it, and he started with this awful brown before we could put our 2 cents in as to what color we'd like to have. I don't know what I would've picked all those years ago, but this wasn't it. Anyhow, the paint was peeling in many places, and the lead levels were high, so enter the new paint job. We decided to bring it back to it's roots, and go with a nice white. After all, a hundred and seventy years ago, white was all they had. This photo was taken Thursday evening. They spent the day priming the wood, and already there is a huge difference in the appearance of our house.

I took this photo this evening. Wednesday marks the 4 year anniversary of the day we bought our house. The photo used in the listing was almost identical to this one, except the barn was more visible, and obviously all that work we just finished wasn't done. The boy's digi cam doesn't have a big enough lens to get the barn in, so this was as good as I could get. This is just primer.. but already I can see the end results, and I love it.

I've been chatting with the painter about the house and the trim we have that no other house in our town seems to have (well, anymore at least.. we don't know if they did once) and he was telling me that our house would've belonged to a mill owner. Our town used to be a big mill town (mill's still there, we're hashing out what to do with it) and the houses around the common belonged to the wealthy mill owners. The elaborate trim we have, and the granite foundation and the bigness of our house all show that the person who built it had a lot of moula.

They claim they will be done painting by the end of next week. And I'm privy to believe them, as they only started priming on Thursday and got almost the whole house done in 2 days. Those two guys are speedy. So Friday when I get home from school, I should have a brand new house awaiting me. I can hardly believe it.
