Summmer... Turns me Upside Down....

Summer is almost here. Officially, and it would seem, in reality. It hasn't even felt like spring around here. It has rained and rained and rained.. and today is the first day in forever that it didn't. I went out to inspect my vegetable plants, and discovered that my "pink flowering bush" has bloomed! I don't know what this shrub is, I inherited it with my house, but I love it. The flowers smell so pretty and sweet. And on a nice evening, I get hummingbirds that come and visit. It doesn't bloom that long, just a few weeks and then it is just green for the rest of the summer. It was a pleasant surprise. I guess all this rain has been good for something.

That window you can see through the top of the flowers is one of the 5 in my bedroom, and if the weather had been cooperating, I'd be able to have that window open and smell those lovely flowers when I awake in the morning. Maybe by the time summer starts next week we'll get that kind of weather, but I'm not holding my breath. I dumped out my rain gauge today, and it had 4.5 inches of water in it since last week. Give me a break! I hear the sun will be out tomorrow, and Tuesday. I sure hope so. We were supposed to go to opening day at the ballpark yesterday, and it got rained out. So opening day will be Tues. and we have tickets already for Tuesday's game.

I was thinking tonight, about how the start of summer brings the longest day of the year, and how tonight, because it wasn't raining, I noticed that it was still nice and light out after 8:30. I remembered how when I was a girl, my dad would make us go to bed at some foolish time in the summer, (I think it was 7:30) and how the other kids would still be out playing and it was so unfair, and who was tired at 7:30? So I used to put my little portable radio under my pillow and listen to it on low. But somehow my dad always knew I had it on, and would come in and bust me. I think next Wednesday, on the first day of summer, which also happens to be the last day of school, I am going to let my kids stay up until the sun goes down. That's what summer is all about isn't it?

I love your shrub! It's so soft-looking.

And the late nights in summer rule. My childhood bedtime was usually 8pm, but I got a lot of leeway in the summertime. I hope you enjoy your later light, now that you are in charge of your bedtime!
